Games for Rwanda

Learn Rwandan Common Birds

The 2020 release version was designed for the the purpose of training the next generation of guides to work in Rwanda's burgeoning tourism industry. It contains a training dataset which introduces players to a set of sounds uttered by species commonly found there and may subsequently be released for both guides and tourist to play.

The utterances taught include common sounds of the following species:

  • African Pied Wagtail (Motacilla aguimp vidua)
  • Grey-capped Warbler (Eminia lepida)
  • Dark-capped Bulbul (Pycnonotus tricolor)
  • Red-chested Cuckoo (Cuculus solitarius)
  • Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum)
  • Yellow-fronted Canary (Crithagra mozambica barbata)
  • Grey-capped Warbler (Eminia lepida)
  • Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta)

All images and audio files were collected from open source datasets. For detail sources visit this list.

Game Installation Instructions

If downloading directly onto your personal device you will likely need the latest version of chrome as your default web browser. You will further require an APK Installer programme loaded on your device; there are several available from the Google Play Store. You will almost certainly need to have turned off Play Protect as described here and continue to follow the instructions outlined here to allow these packages to be loaded.

If the above does not suffice to allow you to install the apk file directly onto your device, you may need to connect your device via USB to a computer. In order to proceed with this method, you will initially need to enable USB debugging of your device which requires that you enable developer mode as described here.

The most consistent way to load an apk file onto your device from a computer is to use the desktop command line tool 'adb.' See here for instructions for loading the tool on your computer. Once available in the terminal, download the linked apk files below, connect your device via USB, and type 'adb -d install /path/to/downloaded.apk' at a terminal prompt.
